The set A is called linearly ordered set or totally ordered set, if every pair of elements in A is comparable.Įxample: The set of positive integers I + with the usual order ≤ is a linearly ordered set. For example, 0 is a whole number but not a natural number, and -5 is an integer but not a whole number or a natural number. Therefore, any number that is a natural number is automatically a whole number, but a whole number may or may not be a natural number. An example of when we would use the natural numbers would be for counting people.
